　世界各地から発信される文化の合流地点、最先端の技術やトレンドの震源地、これらは日本、ひいては東京のほんの一面である。長いスパンで歴史を振り返ると、A BATHING APE®誕生の地である原宿も、新宿のネオン街も、現代の日本の象徴として認識される煌びやかな街の姿は、実はまだ「出来たてほやほや」と形容するべきなのかもしれない。

The focal point of cultural exchange from nations around the world and the origin of the latest cutting-edge technology and trends are only two of many sides of Japan and of its capital, Tokyo. Looking back over its rich history, Harajuku, the birthplace of A BATHING APE®, and Shinjuku's neon district are shining examples of modern Japan that are more relevant than ever on the international stage.

　A BATHING APE®は、日本・東京発祥という誇りを胸に、度々「和」をストリートの言語で解釈したプロダクトを製作してきたが、今一度、日本や東京の「オリジン」を再考した際に、「江戸」というひとつのキーワードに辿り着いた。江戸は、東京の旧称。幕府が設置された1603年から1867年までには、歌舞伎や落語、浮世絵、さらには江戸前寿司に柳川鍋と、さまざまな文化が隆盛し、東京に改称された今でも、これらの文化はカタチを変えずに今日まで継承されている。

A BATHING APE® has birthed many items over the years using streetwear driven interpretations of “Wa (Japan)”, stemmed from pride in the brand’s hometown of Tokyo. The first thing that comes to mind when examining the origins of Tokyo, is “Edo”, the city’s former namesake. From when the Shogunate was created in 1603 until 1867, several important elements of Japanese culture emerged, such as kabuki, rakugo, ukiyo-e, and sushi which all continue to be important parts of Japan and famous around the world to this day.

　その江戸の下町の輪郭作りに一役買っているのが、「浅草」である。今回は、その浅草へと赴き、「JAPANESE CULTURE」の真髄とA BATHING APE®のクリエイションを同居させることにした。浅草寺の仲見世は、平日・週末問わず、多くの観光客が行き交う浅草のメインストリートだ。朱色の背景には、日本古来より伝わる衣服のシルエットがよく似合う。袢天（はんてん）は、江戸時代の18世紀頃から庶民の間で着用されるようになったもので、BAPE®の袢天には我々の最初のカモフーラジュ柄である「1st CAMO」をチョイス。中綿入りのアウターのインナーには、首回りにボリュームを持たせるシンプルなグレーのパーカが吉だろう。

Asakusa, located on the east side of the Taito Ward, was one of the key downtown areas of Edo. For the “Japanese Culture” collection, we headed to Asakusa to combine the essence of Japanese culture with the creations of A BATHING APE®. Nakamise is Sensō-ji temple’s main street, where countless tourists come and go both on weekdays and weekends. Here, the silhouette of Japan’s traditional clothing is complemented well by the distinctive crimson background seen everywhere on Nakamise street. The Hanten jacket became commonly worn in the 18th century during the Edo Period, and BAPE® has selected the “1st CAMO”, the brand’s first ever camouflage pattern to cover this iconic piece.

　浅草寺を満喫したら、その足で合羽橋へ向かおう。食品サンプルは、このエリアの代名詞。また、明治42年創業、陶器一筋で和食器、中華食器を中心に取り揃える小松屋に立ち寄ることも忘れてはいけない。由緒正しい和装もいいが、そういったJAPANインスパイアのカジュアルウェアをモダンにアップデートするのが、BAPE®のイマの気分。過ごしやすい季節のお出かけのお伴に、日本×ストリートの答えとも言える“乙”なリアルクローズをさらりと羽織ってみてはいかがだろうか。

After enjoying Sensō-ji temple, we head to Kappabashi. This area is well known for kitchenware and Japan’s notably realistic food samples. Traditional Japanese outfits are often sought for the full experience when visiting Asakusa, but a completely different feel can be achieved in BAPE®’s “Japanese Culture” items. These authentically styled Japanese garments are a great way to rep classic Edo style while staying warm outside during the winter season.
