～1st CAMOの誕生～
～The Birth of 1st CAMO～

　カモフラージュとはもともとフランス語で「ごまかし」などを意味する言葉。起源については諸説あるが、17世紀初頭にウィリアム・シェイクスピアが発表した戯曲『マクベス』には、兵士が木の枝で身を隠しながら敵の城へと向かうさまが描かれている。カモフラージュがいわゆる「迷彩」という模様として広く世界に知られるところとなったのは、20世紀になってから。ベースとなるグリーンやブラウンにブラックなどの斑点を施した図柄は、航空機での偵察や撮影から設備や兵器を隠すために作られ、その効果が認められるとともに世界へと広まっていった。

The word “camouflage” is a word that originally means “to disguise” in French. There are many theories surrounding its importation into the English language, but it was used in William Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth” staged in the early 17th century to depict the manner in which soldiers conceal their bodies with branches while they advance towards an enemy castle. It was not until the 20th century when the word “camouflage” came into use for what is now ubiquitously known throughout the world as the “camo” pattern. The pattern of black patches overlaying base colors of green and brown was created to conceal equipment and weapons from reconnaissance missions by enemy aircraft and to prevent them from being captured on video. Upon recognizing the effectiveness of the pattern for this purpose, it began to be adopted by countries around the world.

　ファッションにおいては1914年ごろ、パリのファッションデザイナーが婦人服に迷彩柄を取り入れたのが最初であったといわれている。その歴史は戦闘服よりも古く、当時は迷彩柄がモダニティの象徴とされていた。その後、大戦の影響で、迷彩柄は戦争を連想させるものとなったが、1960年代には迷彩柄を着用することが一般的となり、反戦家たちは迷彩柄の軍服を反戦のシンボルとして着用する。さらに1970年代になると、迷彩柄は本格的にデザインとして受け入れられ、ファッションの分野でもたくさんのブランドが採用するようになった。

The “camo” pattern is believed to have found its way into the world of fashion when fashion designers in Paris first incorporated this pattern into their women’s apparel around 1914. In fact, as a symbol of modernity, the history of this pattern predates even military uniforms. Even as the camo pattern subsequently became associated with war as a result of the Second World War, wearing apparel with a camo pattern was commonplace by the 1960s and anti-war families would wear camo military uniforms to express their anti-war sentiments. By the 1970s, the camo pattern was finally accepted as a genuine design and adopted by many fashion brands in their works.

　A BATHING APE®︎（以下、BAPE®︎）からオリジナルのカモフラージュが産み落とされたのは1996年。この東洋の島国で起きた出来事は、カモフラージュの歴史における革命であり、ファッションの歴史における発明であると表現しても過言ではない。

The original camouflage series of A BATHING APE®︎ (or BAPE®︎) was born in 1996. It would not be an exaggeration to describe the trajectory of events on this East Asian island as a revolution in the history of the camo pattern and an invention in the history of fashion.

　今では100種類を超えるBAPE®︎オリジナルのカモフラージュ＝CAMOのバリエーションのうち、その名の通り1ST CAMOこそが記念すべき最初のCAMOである。アメリカで開発されたハンティングカモフラージュをベースとしながら、唯一無二のブランドアイコンであるAPE HEADを柄の中に落とし込むというアイデアこそが、革命あるいは発明と形容される所以。いまでは世界の常套手段となったこの手法、もしかするとそれ以前にもあったかもしれない。しかしながら、世に広めたのは間違いなくBAPE®︎なのである。

BAPE®︎ has over 100 variations of original camouflage apparel (CAMO) at present, among which the 1ST CAMO series was launched in commemoration of the first-ever CAMO series of BAPE®︎, as its name suggests. The idea of using the “hunting camouflage” colors created in the United States as a base pattern over which our brand’s unique icon of the APE HEAD is placed attests to the revolutionary and inventive nature of our design. It is possible that this technique, which has now become common practice in the world, may have existed previously as well. However, there is no doubt that BAPE®︎ is the brand responsible for its global popularity today.

　1ST CAMOはサンドイエロー（YELLOW CAMO）とオリーブドラブ（GREEN CAMO）の２色をオリジナルカラーとして誕生した。1990年代後半には、このCAMOを落とし込んだRAIN JACKETやSNOWBOARD JACKETといったアイテムを、ファッションアイコンとされる俳優や国内外のアーティストが着用。多数のメディアに登場すると瞬く間に若者の支持を集め、それによりBAPE®︎もブランドとしての地位を確立する。

In the 1ST CAMO series, BAPE®︎ had introduced its two original colors of yellow and green camo. In the latter half of the 1990s, items such as CAMO rain jackets and snowboard jackets were worn by actors and actresses as well as Japanese and international artists who were fashion icons. The regular appearance of CAMO in the media resulted in the design swiftly gaining popularity among the younger generation, which cemented the status of BAPE®︎ as a fashion brand.

　 　いまでは多数のカラーバリエーションが存在するものの、オリジナルカラーの魅力が色褪せることはなく、誕生以来20年を超えてなお不動の人気を誇る。2019 AWシーズンとなる今季も、1ST CAMOを使用したアイテムは多くのリリースを予定しており、定番のJET CAPやSHOULDER BAGはもちろん、和テイストのシャツに1ST CAMOを取り入れたKIMONO SHIRTといった変わり種も展開する。いつの時代も常にBAPE®︎の主役であり続け、原点にして最新である1ST CAMO。その新しいコレクションを手に取ってみてはいかがだろうか。

Despite the many color variations that exist today, the appeal of the original colors has not faded, and they remain just as popular after 20 years since their introduction. Many items featuring 1ST CAMO colors are scheduled to be released as part of the current season’s 2019 AW collection, including our popular JET CAP and SHOULDER BAG, as well as new products such as a KIMONO SHIRT featuring 1ST CAMO inflected with a Japanese flair.
